Mount Cardigan

Overview:

When you research mountain bike trails in New Hampshire, Mount Cardigan probably isn’t what comes up. That’s because it’s a very popular hiking trail that rarely gets ridden by mountain bikers who are totally missing out! There are multiple ways up the mountain but some are definitely illegal to bikes so do your research before hitting this long, physical hike a bike. I took the West Ridge trail both up and down which is the most direct route to the summit at 1.5 miles long, however I think there are longer and less physical ways to make it up. Once you’re about 2/3rds of the way to the top, you’ll notice the trail turn into one massive granite face, a mountain biker’s dream come true. Welcome to east coast Moab, it’s all downhill from here!

Pros:

If you’ve never been out west before, chances are this is the biggest slab you’ve ever ridden! There are tons of lines and even a few natural jumps so be on the lookout and have a great time! Lower down the trail transforms into log steps that are very close together and clearly not made for bikes but in my opinion it makes a super fun challenge and a great place to test suspension! The bottom portion of the trail adds tight rocks to the mix that you’ll constantly have to hop over, and watch your feet because this is pedal strike central! Despite this trail having no flow to it whatsoever, I found it surprisingly enjoyable, and theres nothing like conquering slow speed tech!

Cons:

This is a pretty brutal hike to the top, especially with a bike, so make sure you’re in good enough shape before attempting. Also, this place is definitely not for beginners, as I don’t think I spotted a single easy section of trail. For all those racers, this definitely isn’t the place for fast riding. Besides the top section, you’ll be creeping your way down a trail with no flow, jumps, or speed.

Rating: 8.5/10

If this suits your riding style, this will be an adventure of a lifetime. However, there are many people out there who won’t enjoy this, and I think this rating does not necessarily apply to them.
